Sawatch Mountains , range of Rocky Mts. in central Colo., extending c.100 mi/161 km S from Eagle R. to Saguache town; bounded E by Arkansas R. (its source is in NE part of range), W by Elk Mts. Prominent peaks include Ouray Mt. (13,971 ft/4,258 m), Mt. of the Holy Cross (14,005 ft/4,269 m), Grizzly Mt. (13,723 ft/4,183 m), Shavano Peak (14,229 ft/4,337 m), Mt. Antero (14,269 ft/4,349 m), La Plata Peak (14,361 ft/4,377 m), Mt. Massive (14,421 ft/4,396 m), Mt. Elbert (14,433 ft/4,399 m.; highest point in Colo.). Part of range just N of St. Elmo, is known as Collegiate Range; includes Mt. Yale (14,196 ft/4,327 m), Mt. Princeton (14,197 ft/4,327 m), and Mt. Harvard (14,420 ft/4,395 m). Independence Pass (12,095 ft/3,687 m), near Mt. Massive, is crossed by highway, as is Hagerman Pass (11,925 ft/3,635 m), bet. Lake and Pitkin cos. Monarch Pass (11,312 ft/3,448 m) is W of Salida and crossed by highway. Marshall Pass (10,846 ft/3,306 m) is SW of Salida and serves RR. Range is penetrated 10 mi/16 km W of Leadville by Busk-Ivanhoe Tunnel (9,394 ft/2,863 m long), constructed as RR tunnel (1890) and now used by state road. Twin Lakes Tunnel, near Twin Lakes village, is unit in water-diversion project. Covered mainly by San Isabel, White R. and Gunnison natl. forests.
