Sawtooth Mountains
, in S central Idaho, NE of Boise, at head of
Salmon R. and of its Middle Fork and South Fork. Include parts of
Sawtooth, Challis, Payette, and Boise natl. forests. Prominent point is
Castle Peak (11,820 ft/3,603 m). Sawtooth
Range (rising to 10,704 ft/3,263 m) is largely
in Elmore co., in S part of system. Deposits of gold, silver, lead,
zinc, and copper. Source of Salmon and Payette river systems. Highest
part (E) is referred to as the White Cloud Peaks. Sawtooth Wilderness
Area (W) and Sawtooth Natl. Recreation Area (E) are at center of
range.
