40 mi/64 km WNW of Tallahassee, Fla.;
30°49'N 84°51'W. Chattahoochee R. (Ga. border with Ala. and Fla.)
extends c.45 mi/72 km NNW; Chickasawhatchee R.
enters from NE, forms arm c.30 mi/48 km long,
joins lake just above dam. Max. capacity 406,200 acre-ft. Formed by Jim
Woodruff Lock and Dam (53 ft/16 m
high), built (1952) by the Army Corps of Engineers for navigation,
power generation, and flood control. State parks on NE (Ga.) and W
(Ala.) shores and at dam (Fla.).
