Seward
(SOO-uhrd), city (1990 pop. 2,699), Kenai
Peninsula borough, S Alaska, on Kenai Peninsula at the head of
Resurrection Bay; 60°06'N 149°26'W. Its airfield and ice-free
harbor make it an important shipping and supply center for the Alaskan
interior. It has a seafood cannery, fisheries, and freezer plant and a
sawmill; coal terminal, cargo port. Tourism is also important. Seward
was almost completely devastated by an earthquake in 1964 (90% of its
waterfront industry was destroyed). Maximum security prison. Univ. of
Alaska Maritime Educational Center. An annual salmon derby is held, and
a race up nearby Mt. Marathon (3,022 ft/921 m)
every July 4th attracts athletes from a wide area. Ferry service to
Kodiak Isl. and Prince William Sound communities. Ranger
office for Chugach Natl. Forest; Kenai Fjords Natl. Park to
SW. Founded in 1903 as the ocean terminus of the Alaska RR (built
1915-1923); inc. 1912.
