, Harrison co., SE Miss., in the Gulf of Mexico, in
isl. chain (Gulf Isls.) lying bet. Mississippi Sound (N) and Chandeleur
Sound (S), 11 mi/18 km S of Biloxi;
c.8 mi/12.9 km long. A lighthouse (30°13'N
88°58'W), old Fort Massachusetts (built just before Civil War; later
destroyed and rebuilt), and a former quarantine station are here.
Surfing, swimming, boating. Was a port of entry for Fr. and Span.
vessels from end of 17th cent. to 1720s. Isl. was held alternately by
Union and Confederate forces in Civil War. To W is deepwater channel
(Ship Isl. Pass) connecting the gulf (passenger ferries) with harbors
of Biloxi, Gulfport, and other ports. Part of Gulf Islands Natl.
Seashore.
