Sioux Falls
, city (1990 pop. 100,814), Minnehaha co.,
and includes N. Lincoln co., SE S.Dak., on the Big Sioux R. First
settled in 1856, then abandoned in 1862 because of Native Amer. raids,
but with the establishment (1865) of Fort Dakota it was resettled.
Named for the falls on the Big Sioux R. (which furnish power), Sioux
Falls is the largest city in the state and the commercial, industrial,
and shipping center of an extensive agr. area. It has an important
livestock market (one of the largest in the U.S.) as well as
meat-processing plants. Electronics and machinery are among the
principal manufactures. Sandstone (Sioux Falls granite) is
quarried nearby. Mfg. (signs, bldg. materials, computers, hot air
balloons, plastic prods., consumer goods, sheet metal, paper prods.,
machinery, foods, apparel, transportation equip., electronic goods,
storage bins, wood prods.; printing; sawmill). Seat of Univ. of Sioux
Falls, Augustana Col., N. Amer. Baptist Seminary, and School for the
Hearing Impaired. Also in the city are the S.Dak. Penitentiary (?is)& State
Prison Farm (?is)& Joe Foss Field, Sioux Falls Regional Airport in N part.,
Pettigrew Mus. (?is)& Old Courthouse Mus.; W. H. Lyons Fairgrounds, and the
Great Plains Zoo. Siouxland Heritage Mus.; Battleship U.S.S. South
