Smith Island
, low-lying marshy archipelago, SE Md. and
E Va., consisting of islets divided by narrow creeks, in Chesapeake Bay
8 mi/12.9 km W of Crisfield (ferry); S tip is
in Va.; c.8 mi/12.9 km long,
4 mi/6.4 km wide. Most remote of Md. isls. and
named for Capt. John Smith, the 3 small villages on the isl.Ewell,
Tylertown, and Rhodes Pointare separated by marshes. The people, who
speak an archaic Eng. in which triple as well as double negatives are
used, have made their living here from oystering and crabbing for over
300 years. Methodism, which reached here during the Great Revival,
helped create a peaceful culture, in which there is no jail, no police,
and no town govt. The most prominent landmarks are the steeples of the
3 Methodist churches.
