Soulanges Canal
(soo-LAWNZH), S Que., E Canada, extends
14 mi/23 km bet. lakes St. Francis (W) and St.
Louis (E), on N side of the St. Lawrence R., bypassing rapids.
Completed 1899, with 5 locks, it superseded original Beauharnois Canal,
on S side of the St. Lawrence. Earlier canal on same route was opened
1783, enlarged 1848. Canal is now used for power purposes only.
