, industrial district in Baltimore co., central
Md., on navigable Patapasco R., and
9 mi/14.5 km SE of downtown Baltimore. Blast
furnaces have been operating here since 1889. The giant steel mill and
shipyard was acquired by the Bethlehem Steel Corp. in 1916 and steadily
expanded. In full production, the facility could employ 22,000. Foreign
and domestic ore as well as finished steel prods. are shipped out of
the deep water ore docks and RR lines. The land was originally deeded
to Thomas Sparrow by Lord Baltimore in 1666. His son, Solomon, built
the 1st house called Sparrow's Nest.
