Stockbridge , resort town (1990 pop. 2,408), Berkshire co., W Mass., on the Housatonic R., in the Berkshire Mts.; 42°18'N 73°20'W. It is a year-round tourist resort with nearby lake, ski, and recreational areas. Founded (1734) as a mission for the Muhhekanuks (Mohicans), the town was originally offered by Eng. settlers to what became known as the Stockbridge Indians, in reward for their defense of the English against Fr. forces and other tribes. Increased Eur. settlement in the area whittled down the size of the town and, despite Mohican assistance during the Amer. Revolution, the remaining Native Americans here were pressured into leaving for reservations and settlements in N.Y. and Wis. The mission house, restored as a mus., was built in 1739. The Berkshire Playhouse, a leading summer theater; a large art colony; and several galleries and mus. are here. The annual Berkshire Festival is held at Tanglewood, a former estate largely in the town of Stockbridge. Also of interest are the studio of sculptor Daniel Chester French and the Norman Rockwell Mus. The Boston Symphony Orchestra maintains a music school here. Includes villages of Glendale, Interlaken. Inc. 1739.
