Stone Mountain Memorial
, historic site, memorial to the
Confederacy, consisting of the equestrian figures of Robert E. Lee,
Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis carved on the N face
of Stone Mt., a granite dome 650 ft/198 m high
in NW Ga., NE of Atlanta, in Stone Mt. Park. The memorial was
commissioned by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1916 and was
designed and partially executed by Gutzon Borglum. In 1925, sculptor
Augustus Lukeman took charge of the project. Work stopped in 1930 and
was not resumed until 1963, when the state of Ga. purchased the mt. and
established a state park. Walter Hahock completed the sculpture, which
was dedicated in 1970.
