Sullivan
, county
( 996 sq mi/2,580 sq km;
1990 pop. 69,277), SE N.Y., Monticello, 41°43'N 74°45'W.
Bounded W and SW by Delaware R. (here forming Pa. border); includes
parts of the Catskills and the Shawangunk range. Drained by Neversink
R., Shawangunk and Beaver Kills, and small Willowemoc Creek. Vacation
region, with many mt. and lake resorts. Despite its proximity to N.Y.
city and good infrastructure, farming has declined markedly due to
changing farm economics and land values. Poultry raising is still
relatively important; as is dairying. Some timber. Mfg. at Monticello.
As with other Catskill cos., e.g., Delaware (DE), Greene, Schoharie and
Ulster, there has been a marked, post-1950 decline in the famous resort
hotels that, for a cent. characterized the region. It remains a
favorite vacation region, however, particularly for downstate New
Yorkers. Formed 1809.
