Commercial, industrial center of wide region. Highly urbanized in
center and E parts and with Fort Worth at its center, this co. is the
smaller partner in the Dallas-Fort Worth urbanized region. While
Dallas's growth has radiated in all directions and has extended beyond
Dallas co.'s boundaries, Fort Worth's growth has been mainly confined
to Tarrant co., primarily to E and NE. The co.'s development owes as
much to Dallas's growth as to Fort Worth's. Besides Fort Worth, other
major cities include Arlington, Mansfield, Haltom City, Hurst, and part
of Grand Prairie (partly in Dallas co.). Drained by West and Clear
forks of Trinity R., and here joining numerous creeks; includes Worth
and Eagle Mt. lakes in NW (recreation, water supply). Agr. (dairying;
grains, cotton, pecans, sorghum, vegetables, nursery crops; livestock,
including cattle, poultry, horses, emus, ostriches, and rheas) is still
important in the S, W, and NW margins of the co. Natural gas; sand and
gravel, stone. Oil refining, meat packing, grain milling and shipping,
diversified mfg. at Fort Worth. Dallas-Fort Worth Internatl. Airport,
a major factor in attracting industry, straddles the Tarrant and Dallas
cos. line in NE. Grapevine Recreation Area is in NE corner, N of the
airport; Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge is in NW. Benbrook L. in
SW, L. Arlington in E center, part of Grapevine L. (NE) and L. Joe Pool
(SE). Formed 1849.
