Drained by Trinity, Eel, and Mad rivers. Gold mining (since gold rush
days); also sand and gravel; hay; nursery prods.; timber. Mt. scenery,
camping, hiking attract vacationers. Pacific Crest Scenic Trail follows
NE boundary. Trinity Unit of Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity Natl.
Recreation Area in NE, including Clair Engle L. reservoir (Trinity R.);
in NW is Salmon-Trinity Alps Wilderness Area; in S is a reserve of
wilderness lands; part of Six Rivers Natl. Forest in SW, part of
Mendocino Natl. Forest in SE corner, parts of Trinity Natl. Forest
throughout center and N, part of Shasta Natl. Forest to NE; Weaverville
Joss House State Historical Park in center. Formed 1850.
