Drive (E), and 1st Ave. (W); 40°45'N 73°57'W. Hq. of the UN, an
organization of sovereign states founded in 1945 which promotes
internatl. peace and cooperation. Strictly speaking, the site is not
part of the city, the state, or even the U.S. Built on an
18-acre/7-ha site known as Turtle Bay (which, ironically,
was the site of abattoirs until 1946). The land was purchased by the
Rockefeller family, which then donated it to the city for the UN site.
The dominant feature is the 39-story Secretariat Bldg., but other
bldgs. include the General Assembly and Conference and Lib. bldgs.
Flags of all member nations fly outside hq. Staffed by
c.23,000 employees, representing over 150 countries; issues its own
stamps.
