20 mi/32 km W to E, from S shore of Vermilion
L. to Ely, Mesabi Iron Range c.10 mi/16 km to
S, parallels Vermilion Range. Ore discovered (1865) by Eames brothers.
The 1st shipment took place 1884, following gold rush that collapsed
when assays failed to confirmed promised values. Iron ore is shipped to
Two Harbors, on L. Superior. Chief mining points are Ely, Tower, and
Soudan.
