Victoria de Durango
(veek-TO-ree-ah dai doo-RAHN-do) city (1990
pop. 348,036) and township, Durango municipio and Durango
state, N central Mexico, on Mexico Highways 40 and 45; 24°01'N
104°40'W. Minerals are the chief prod., but the city is also an agr.,
commercial, and tourist center. Founded as a mining town in 1563,
Durango served as capital of the region of Nueva Viscaya. Nearby is the
Cerro del Mercado (640 ft/195 m), a hill of
rich iron ore. Durango's cathedral is a massive example of early
18th-cent. architecture. Also called Durango.
