Vieques
(vee-AI-kais), island (
51 sq mi/132 sq km; 1990 pop.
8,602), off E P.R., c.6 mi/9.7 km E
of Fajardo. It is hilly, with a dry, warm climate. The town of Vieques,
commonly called Isabel Segunda, was founded in 1843 and is the main
pop. center. Highest point (983 ft/300 m) is
Pico Pirata. The isl. has gained popularity as a holiday resort.
Fishing, tourism, camping and picnicking. Has phosphorescent bay
(Mosquito Bay; E). The major portion of Vieques is used as a training
area for the U.S. Navy. Lighthouse on N side. Conde de Mirasol Fort on
N side. Mus. of archaeology and natural history. Accessible by planes
from San Juan and Fajardo, ferries from Fajardo.
