Walla Walla , city (1990 pop. 26,478), Walla Walla co., SE Wash., c.115 mi/185 km SSW of Spokane, and 33 mi/53 km NE of Pendleton (Oregon), on Mill Creek, 5 mi/8 km E of its junction with Walla Walla R., 4 mi/6.4 km N of the Oregon state line; 46°04'N 118°20'W. RR junction. It is a trade, processing, and distributing center for a fertile farm and lumber area. Fruits and vegetables (esp. green peas) are canned and frozen in numerous plants there, grain is processed for animal feeds, and cans are manufactured; mfg. (pesticides, printing and publishing, packaging machinery, archery equip., irrigation equip., plumbing fixtures, wine, wood prods.). The city also has a pulp and paper mill; logging. Umatilla Natl. Forest (Wash. and Oregon state line) to SE. The old fur-trading Fort Walla Walla was established near that site in 1818; the mission of Marcus Whitman was also built (1836) nearby. Wagon trains began bringing settlers in the 1840s, and Steptoeville (later Walla Walla) grew around the U.S. military Fort Walla Walla (est. 1856). The name was changed when the settlement became co. seat in 1859. Walla Walla is a dist. hq. of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is also the seat of Whitman Col., Walla Walla Col. (to SW, in College Place), and Walla Walla Community Col., and Wash. State Penitentiary to NW of city. Whitman Mission Natl. Historical Site to W. Walla Walla City-Co. Airport to NE. Inc. 1862.
