Wasatch Range
, part of the Rocky Mts., extending
c.250 mi/402 km S from SE Idaho to central
Utah. Mt. Timpanogos, the highest peak
(11,750 ft/3,581 m), in S Timpanogos Cave
Natl. Monument. Many streams on the W flank of the Wasatch carry water
into the oasis of the Jordan Valley and Great Salt L. E shore, which
stretches along the W foothills; where Utah's principal cities and
most of the state's pop. are found. Emigrant Canyon, just E of Salt
Lake City, a site of early Mormon migration and influence is now a
major winter-resort area. Skiing is an important industry throughout
range. Much of the range is covered by Wasatch Natl. Forest, (Utah);
Cache Natl. Forest (Idaho). The waters of the range, except for extreme
SE, are within the Great Basin drainage system.
