(WASH-i-taw) river,
c.450 mi/724 km long; rising in Hemphill co.,
E of Miami, in the Texas Panhandle; flows E into Okla. and through
Black Kettle Natl. Grassland (Texas, Okla.), then SE through Foss L.
reservoir, past Clinton, Chickasha, Paul's Valley, entering large arm
of L. Texoma (Red R.) and Tichomingo. It is a variation spelling of
Ouachita. The battle of the Washita (1868), in which General Custer
defeated the Cheyenne, took place on the river, near the town of
Cheyenne, Okla.
