Whitewater
, locality, Marion co., N Ark., at junction of White R. and
Crooked Creek, 20 mi/32 km SW of Mountain
Home, in the Ozark Mts.; 36°10'N 92°28'W. Started as a recreational
retirement development in the late 1970s, plans called for 180
acres/73 ha to be subdivided. The lots were sold
off in 1985 to reduce the debt on the mortgage by its owners
(who included then-Gov. Bill Clinton). Whitewater became the focus of
Congressional inquiry in the mid-1990s, based upon allegations that a
fraudulent loan had been made to permit the owners to initiate the
development.
