Wind Cave National Park

44 sq mi/114 sq km), Custer co.,
SW S.Dak., 30 mi/48 km SSW of Rapid City, in
the Black Hills, SW S.Dak. Est. 1903. Wind Cave, discovered in 1881,
was named for the strong air currents that blow in and out of it. The
limestone cave has unusual calcite-crystal and boxwork formations. The
park's surface is a game preserve characterized by rolling grasslands
and pine-covered ridges where bison, elk, deer, and pronghorn antelope
can be found; several prairie dog towns are in the park. Visitors'
Center. Large Custer State Park adjoins on N. Drained by Beaver
Creek.
