Wounded Knee
, village (1990 pop. 18), Shannon co., SW S.Dak.;
12 mi/19 km NE of Pine Ridge Indian
Reservation. Site of the last major battle of the Indian Wars and the
Wounded Knee Massacre. After the murder of Sitting Bull, a band of
Sioux, led by Big Foot, fled to Pine Ridge, but were captured by the
7th Cavalry on Dec. 28, 1890, and brought to the creek (29 soldiers
were killed in the battle). The next day, unarmed Indian men, women,
and children were shot by U.S. troops.
