Xaltocan, Lake
(hahl-TO-kahn), central Mexico, 1 of 5 shallow,
interconnected lakes that occupied the Valley of Mexico in
pre-Columbian times. Along with lakes Zumpango and Texcoco, it is
saline. A system of canals and tunnels constructed at various times
since the Span. colonial period has drained the original lake, the bed
of which is now occupied by part of Mexico city.
