Yaddo
, NW section (1990 pop. 25) of Saratoga Springs, Saratoga
co., N N.Y., 30 mi/48 km N of Albany;
43°04'N 73°46'W. An elegant 40-acre/16-ha retreat for
composers, writers, and visual artists, the opulent, stone manor was
built at the turn of the cent. by Spencer and Katrina Trask as a
residence. The estate was turned into an artists' colony 4 years after
Katrina Trask's death in 1922. The manor plays host to as many as 25
resident artists; among the 2,500 Yaddo alumni have been Saul Bellow,
Aaron Copland, Katharine Anne Porter, Virgil Thomson, Eudora Welty,
Philip Roth, John Cheever, Milton Avery, Bernard Malamud, Leonard
Bernstein, and Truman Capote.
