central Calif.; formed in Sierra Nevada
c.30 mi/48 km NE of Marysville by junction of
the North Yuba (c.55 mi/89 km long) and the
Middle Yuba (c.45 mi/72 km long); flows SW
through Englebright Reservoir, where it receives South Yuba R.
(c.55 mi/89 km long) from E to Feather R. at
Marysville. Receives South Yuba R.
(c.55 mi/89 km long) in lower course. In South
Yuba R. are: L. Spaulding (3 mi/4.8 km long),
formed by L. Spaulding Dam (275 ft/84 m high,
800 ft/244 m long; completed 1919; for power),
and L. Van Norden (1.5 mi/2.4 km long),
impounded by power dam near Norden. Upper Narrows Dam on lower course
is 260 ft/79 m high and
1,142 ft/348 m long; completed 1941 for debris
control. North Yuba R. is site of New Bullards Bar Dam and reservoir of
Central Valley project, replacing Bullards Bar Dam (completed 1924).
River and headstreams yielded much gold after 1848. South Yuba R. rises
12 mi/19 km NW of Tahoe City, in NE Placer
co., near Donner Pass; flows W through L. Van Norden and L. Spalding
reservoirs to Engelbright Reservoir. Middle Yuba R. rises
22 mi/35 km NW of Tahoe City, in N Nev. co.;
flows NW, then SW, to Yuba R. North Yuba R. rises
c.14 mi/23 km E of Downieville, in E Sierra
co.; flows W past Downieville, then S through Bullards Bar Reservoir to
join Middle Fork Yuba to form Yuba R.
