ABBREVIATION : FASP COMMON NAMES : American kestrel sparrow hawk TAXONOMY : The currently accepted scientific name for the American kestrel is Falco sparverius Linnaeus [1,2]. It is in the family Falconidae [1]. Four recognized subspecies occur in North America and are listed below [1]: F. sparverius sparverius F. sparverius guadalupensis Bond F. sparverius paulus (Howe and King): southeastern American kestrel F. sparverius peninsularis Mearns ORDER : Falconiformes CLASS : Bird FEDERAL LEGAL STATUS : See OTHER STATUS OTHER STATUS : Southeastern American kestrels are federally listed as a Category 2 subspecies [63] and are classified as threatened by the state of Florida [62]. They have declined by over 80 percent in north-central Florida during recent decades and similar declines have occurred throughout the state [50].
