TAXONOMY :
The currently accepted scientific name for sharp-tailed grouse is
Tympanuchus phasianellus (Linnaeus). It is in the family Phasianidae.
The six recognized subspecies are listed below [1]:
T. phasianellus phasianellus northern sharp-tailed grouse
T. phasianellus kennicotti (Suckley) northwestern sharp-taile grouse
T. phasianellus caurus (Friedmann) Alaskan sharp-tailed grouse
T. phasianellus columbianus (Ord) Columbian sharp-tailed grouse
T. phasianellus campestris (Ridgeway) prairie sharp-tailed grouse
T. phasianellus jamesi (Lincoln) plains sharp-tailed grouse
Sharp-tailed grouse hybridize with greater prairie chickens (T. cupido)
and blue grouse (Dendragpus obscurus [43,51].

The Columbian sharp-tailed grouse is federally listed as a Category 2
species (Notice of review) [52].
The sharp-tailed grouse has been on the Blue List since 1972 [50]. The
Bureau of Land Management has listed the sharp-tailed grouse as
"sensitive" in Idaho [35]. The plains sharp-tailed grouse is listed as
endangered by the state of Colorado [37]. The Columbian sharp-tailed
grouse is listed by the United States Forest Service as sensitive in
Region 4 [48], by the state of California as a subspecies of special
concern [49], and by The Nature Conservancy as critically imperiled in
Wyoming [48].
