The currently accepted scientific name of gray fox is Urocyon
cinereoargenteus Schreber. It is a member of the dog family (Canidae).
There are 15 accepted subspecies; the 7 subspecies occurring north of
Mexico are as follows [16]:

U. c. californicus Mearns
U. c. cinereoargenteus (Schreber)
U. c. floridanus Rhoads
U. c. ocythous Bangs
U. c. scottii Mearns
