The currently accepted name of fireweed is Epilobium angustifolium L.;
it is in the evening primrose family (Onagraceae).  This is an extremely
variable taxon with worldwide distribution [164].  Recognized
subspecies, varieties, and forms are [72,112,224]:

     E. a. ssp. angustifolium Mosq.
     E. a. ssp. circumvagum Mosq.
     E. a. var. canescens Wood
     E. a. f. albiflorum (Dum.) Haussk.
     E. a. f. spectabile (Simmons) Fern.
