The currently accepted scientific name of blazing star is Liatris
punctata Hook [3,16,20].  It is in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

Recognized varieties are as follows:

     L. p. var. punctata
     L. p. var. mexicana Gaiser [43]
     L. p. var. nebraskana Gaiser [16,33,43]

Blazing star produces natural hybrids with gayfeather (L. mucronata) [31].
