ABBREVIATION : PINRIG SYNONYMS : NO-ENTRY SCS PLANT CODE : PIRI COMMON NAMES : pitch pine hard pine bull pine TAXONOMY : The currently accepted scientific name of pitch pine is Pinus rigida Mill. [22,25]. There are no recognized varieties or subspecies. Pitch pine hybridizes with P. serotina in southern New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia; with loblolly pine (P. taeda) in Delaware; and with shortleaf pine (P. echinata) and Table Mountain pine (P. pungens) in the southern Appalachian Mountains and Piedmont region.
