The currently favored scientific name of Texas madrone is Arbutus texana Buckl. [14]. However, many authorities recognize this entity as a variety or form of Mexican madrone, Arbutus xalpensis [6,12,17]. The epithet Arbutus xalpensis var. texana Buckl. is commonly applied to Texas madrone [12].
