FIRE ECOLOGY
SPECIES: Artemisia arbuscula ssp. arbuscula | Gray Low Sagebrush
FIRE ECOLOGY OR ADAPTATIONS :
Gray low sagebrush is a nonsprouter which reestablishes a burned site
through small, light, wind-dispersed seed [71].
Many gray low sagebrush communities are characterized by a depauperate
understory with significant amounts of exposed soil and rock, and stands
often lack enough fuels to carry a fire [1,10,12]. Consequently, fires
in gray low sagebrush communities are comparatively rare. The
possibility of fire is increased during years of above-average
precipitation which can result in increased herbaceous growth. This is
especially true on sites that have been invaded by weedy species such as
medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae) or cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum)
[12,68]. Such species are highly flammable when cured.
POSTFIRE REGENERATION STRATEGY :
Initial-offsite colonizer (off-site, initial community)
