It is a member of the oak family (Fagaceae) [23,57]. No infrataxa are recognized. Where distributions overlap in Texas, Emory oak hybrizes with graceful oak (Q. graciliformis) to form Tharp oak (Q. xtharpii C. H. Mull.) and Graves oak (Q. gravesii) to form robust oak (Q. xrobusta C. H. Mull.) [23,96,105,121].
