The currently accepted scientific name of this moss is Tortula ruralis
(Hedw.) Gaertn., Meyer, & Scherb. (Pottiaceae) [7,9,10,24,29].  The
following varieties are recognized in North America [11]:

  Tortula ruralis var. ruralis
  T. ruralis var. crinita De Not
  T. ruralis var. hirsuta (Vent.) Kramer
    
Western forms of T. ruralis may grade into the more robust T.
ruraliformis (Besch.) Dixon [18].
