FIRE MANAGEMENT CONSIDERATIONS:Grazing exclusion for 2 or more years is beneficial for revegetation of postfire shadscale communities. First year shadscale seedlings lack spines and are highly susceptible to browsing. Spines develop 2nd year [161]. The slow postfire recovery of shadscale allows for easy invasion and subsequent replacement by cheatgrass in western rangelands [129].
