 TAXONOMY:The currently accepted scientific name for shadscale is Atriplex confertifolia (Torr & Frem) (Chenopodiaceae) [77,90,91,152]. Shadscale hybridizes naturally with fourwing saltbush (A. canescens) [77,152], Garrett's saltbush (A. garrettii), mat saltbush (A. corrugata) [74,140,152], Gardner's saltbush (A. gardneri) [152], and valley saltbush (A. cuneata) [140]. Crosses with Garrett's saltbush produce completely sterile hybrids. Mat saltbush × shadscale crosses produce nearly sterile hybrids [74].
