It rarely occurs as a dominant. It is most abundant in interior chaparral dominated by evergreen oaks (Quercus turbinella, Q. grisea) and birchleaf mountain-mahogany (Cercocarpus betuloides) or true mountain-mahogany (C. montanus) and as an understory component of pinyon-juniper woodlands [3,7,20].
