TAXONOMY :
The currently accepted scientific name of highbush blueberry is
Vaccinium corymbosum L. [24]. It is a member of the true blueberry
section Cyanococcus.
The highbush blueberry complex is highly variable and includes diploids,
tetraploids, hexaploids, and various hybrid combinations [7,24]. It has
long been a subject of taxonomic confusion and controversy; numerous
taxonomic treatments have been proposed. In 1945, Camp [2] proposed a
tentative classification of the highbush blueberry complex, dividing it
into 12 species as follows:
V. fuscatum Aiton
V. atrococcum (Gray) Heller
V. caesariense Mackenzie
V. elliottii Chapman
V. australe Small
V. corymbosum L.
V. arkansanum Ashe
V. marianum Watson
V. simulatum Small
V. constablaei Gray
V. ashei Reade
V. amoenum Aiton
Although tentative, this classification became widely accepted and was
incorporated in many Eastern floras. Investigating morphological
variation within this group, Vander Kloet [24] concluded that all of
Camp's proposed species should be considered one species, Vaccinium
corymbosum L. Camp's proposed species are thus now considered to be
synonymous with Vaccinium corymbosum.
Highbush blueberry hybridizes with low sweet blueberry (V.
angustifolium) [24].
