Jordan Women in the Armed Forces
Women military personnel receiving instruction
Although they were not subject to compulsory service and did
not serve in combat-related positions, women had been recruited at
both officer and enlisted levels. Most of the female service
personnel occupied administrative or secretarial positions or
served in communications units. Women also were employed as doctors
and nurses in military hospitals. In 1989 the highest ranking
woman, a colonel, was in the Medical Corps. The facilities formerly
occupied by the Jordanian Military Academy near Az Zarqa had been
converted to a training school for women soldiers.
