Bharat Aluminium Company
Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (BALCO) is an Indian aluminium company. It was in the public sector until 2001 when it was taken over by Vedanta Resources a company which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. BALCO has been the first in the Indian Aluminium Industry to produce the Alloy Rods which is a Feedstock for all Aluminium Alloy Conductors very much needed for today’s power transmission lines. Now they are into the power generation as well which is mainly a coal-based power plant.
Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation
Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Limited (GMDC) is a major minerals and lignite mining company of India. It is State owned company owned by Government of Gujarat. GMDC was founded in 1963. Its corporate headquarters is at Ahmedabad. Its product range includes essential energy minerals like lignite base metals and industrial minerals like bauxite and flourspar.
Gujrat government as given its green signal to GMDC to form a joint venture with NALCO for a 1 mtpa refinery. GMDC also owns and runs Akrimota Thermal Power Station a 250 MW lignite-based thermal power plant located in village Nanichher in Lakhpat Taluka, Kutch District.

According to the New York Times Vedanta Resources is known in some parts of the world for having left financial and environmental problems in their wake. Hindalco Industries
Hindalco Industries Ltd. is an aluminium manufacturing company and is a subsidiary of the Aditya Birla Group. Its headquarters are at Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It is the Flagship company of the company in the metals business. The company has annual sales of US$ 15 billion and employs around 20,000 people. It is listed in the Forbes Global 2000 at 895th rank. Its market capitalisation by the end of May 2013 was US$ 3.4 billion. Hindalco is one of the world’s largest aluminium rolling companies and one of the biggest producers of primary aluminium in Asia.
Power plant:
- Renusagar Power Plant: A 742 MW captive power plant which is about 40 km from Renukoot, Sonebhadra district, Uttar Pradesh.
- Hirakud Captive Power Plant: A 467.5 MW captive power plant located at Hirakud, Sambalpur District Odisha. This plant supplies power to Hirakud smelter of Hindalco Industries.
- Utkal Alumina Captive Power Plant: A 90 MW captive power plant located at Doraguda, Rayagada District Odisha. This plant supplies power to Utkal Refinery of Hindalco Industries.
National Aluminium Company
National Aluminium Company Limited abbreviated as NALCO has units in Odisha at places like Angul and Damanjodi. It was incorporated as a public sector enterprise of the Ministry of Mines Government of India in 1981. It is Asia’s largest, and the sixth largest integrated aluminium complex encompassing bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting and casting, power generation, rail and port operations.
The main units of NALCO are at Damanjodi and Nalconagar, Angul. The Bauxite mines called “Panchpatmalli Mines” is situated atop a set of five mountains called Panchpatmalli. These mines are open cast mines. Nalco received ISO 9001:2000 awards and OHSAS 140001 for its excellence in production technology & occupational health & safety systems respectively.
