Turkmenistan
Natural Resources
Turkmenistan has substantial reserves of oil and gas, and geologists
have estimated that 99.5 percent of its territory is conducive
to prospecting. The republic also has deposits of sulfur, hydrocarbons,
iodine, celestine, potassium salt, magnesium salt, sodium chloride,
bentonite clays, limestone, gypsum, brown coal, cement, basalt,
and dolomite. Its soils, which have been formed under conditions
of continental climate, are mostly desert sands, with a variety
of other types such as desert loess, meadow clays, and "irrigated"
soils, in some regions. Under those conditions, large-scale agriculture
must be supported by irrigation in nearly all areas.
