Zairian health statistics are similar to those of other
countries in Central Africa. Life expectancy at birth in
1992 was
estimated at fifty-two years for males and fifty-six years
for
females. While unimpressive by United States standards,
the
statistics on life expectancy have improved markedly, a
real
achievement given the challenges to public health the
country
faces.
