Algeria
POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT
Postindependence Politics and the Socialist Tradition
Algeria's current political culture is a result of the French
colonial legacy, the War of Independence, the Arab and Islamic
cultural traditions and the part these play in national unity
and cohesion, and the integral role of the military. The consolidation
of authority and the institutionalization of political structure
characterized the postindependence years as the new Algerian nation
struggled to overcome the instability of the revolutionary period.
National integrity and national institutions were viewed as equally
important as Algeria worked to consolidate its independent political
structure and tradition and to overcome the administrative and
economic vacuum that resulted from the departure of most Europeans
who had lived in Algeria.
