Buchan, John, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir[buk´un, twEdz´myOOr] Pronunciation Key, 18751940, Scottish author and statesman. Included among his works are a four-volume history (192122) of World War I; biographies of Julius Caesar (1932), Scott (1932), and Cromwell (1934); and adventure novels, including The Thirty-nine Steps (1915), The Path of the King (1921), and Mountain Meadow (1941). Elected to Parliament in 1927, he was appointed governor-general of Canada in 1935 and was raised to the peerage. His administration of Canada was popular, and he promoted good relations with the United States.
