Chonju[chun´jOO´] Pronunciation Key, city (1995 pop. 563,406), capital of North Cholla prov., SW South Korea. It is a transportation and agricultural center in the heart of the country's most densely populated and richest rice-growing area. Food processing and textile manufacturing are the chief industries, along with the production of paper, plastics, boots, and tires. The city was the capital of the Hu Paekju dynasty (892936). The founder of the Yi dynasty, Korea's last imperial line, is buried in Chonju.
