Hans Georg Dehmelt[hAns gA´Orkh dA´mult] Pronunciation Key, 1922–, American physicist, b. Germany, Ph.D. Univ. of GOttingen, 1950. A professor at the Univ. of Washington in Seattle, Dehmelt worked with Wolfgang Paul from the Univ. of Bonn to develop an ion trap technique, which made possible the detailed study of subatomic particles. For this invention, Dehmelt and Paul shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics with Norman F. Ramsey.
