Jelenia GOra[yele´nyA gOO´rA] Pronunciation Key, Ger. Hirschberg, city (1992 est. pop. 93,500), Dolnoslaskie prov., SW Poland. It is an industrial and commercial center known for its woolen textiles. Chartered in 1312, the city passed to Bohemia in 1368. A prosperous weaving center in the 15th and 16th cent., the city was destroyed by the Thirty Years War (1618–48) and, in 1640, by the plague. It was rebuilt and suffered again under Prussian rule in the 18th cent.
